I should be used to the prices for “marine” items by now. I guess I’m still having my mind blown. Our old rub rails were made of aluminum and they were pretty tore up from years of overly rambunctious dock pilings. I went to Marine Connection to price them, and, to put it in text lingo, OMG! I would need 7 lengths of 12 foot aluminum rub rail and they cost $95 each! That’s not happening. Instead Laurel’s dad said we should try the recycled decking material. It is hard, plastic and shouldn’t weather. I went to Lowes and bought two 8 foot stripes for $40. Then, while in the shop we cut them in strips, routored the edges and drilled some counter sunk holes every 6 inches. The rails turned out great and installation was smooth with little dab o
f 5200 and two drills (one for drilling holes and one for sinking in the screw). Now we’ll just see how they handle one of those overly rambunctious dock pilings.
