Key Largo

Date

Dinghy DockWe sailed from our north Key Largo anchorage with some good wind and after an all day sail through some really neat cuts and channels, we finally anchored up in an area that would be protected from the NW. After an hour or two the wind started howling from the west and we started to drag. Instead of resetting the anchors and dealing with the choppy and gusty conditions, we moved into Tarpon Basin. It is protected from all sorts of wind and is a comfortable depth for us. There also is a DSCN1842government building on shore that allows cruisers to use their dock to tie your dinghy to. It’s been nice having a safe place to keep the dinghy while we ride our bikes around Key Largo trying to finish up our last minute errands like filling the propane, doing laundry, getting gas for the outboard, getting Mr. C’s ice cream and going to Publix.  We have been biking everywhere and pushing the limits with how much crap we can bungee to the bike without unintentionally popping a wheelie. The limit was reached with laundry, a tool kit and a backpack. Thankfully I am a professional wheelie popper.

DSCN1833On the boat we are still working on projects and organizing. My “honey do” list is always long and tiring with such choirs as, fixing the head (toilet), fixing the hand pump, fixing Laurel a fried egg and fixing something that I have already fixed 10 times. We have also been doing a bit of baking. Now everything we make has been labeled Griffin’s or Laurel’s “famous” something. Laurel baked “Laurel’s Famous Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookies”.

Laurel crunching numbersNow the countdown has begun to crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. Every day we listen to the mispronouncing monotone robotic voice that tells us the forecast. It sounds like Monday or Tuesday is our day. It is supposed to be SE at 10 to 15 knot wind and seas 2-3 feet. Until then we still have to fill up our diesel tanks, get lots of produce, finish my honey do list and do our 50 hour engine maintenance.

We finally got to take hot showers. It was little hard to shave without a mirror. I missed a little.
