Wow, a week has flown by and it is now time to head out of Hatchet Bay towards southern Eleuthra. This entire week has been pretty fun and somewhat productive. The week started with our wind generator crapping out on us. The company has been really difficult to get a hold of and hopefully we can get this sorted out. In the mean time we found a local place that sold solar panels just as cheap as you can find them on Ebay. We installed two 80 watt panels on the bimini and now should have plenty of juice for the batteries and fridge. Anchored next to us were two boats with younger cruisers on board. One boat had three London blokes on it and the other had a single hander from the west coast of Florida. We all spent some time checking out caves and the local scenery. Funny enough, all of our itineraries are fairly similar, heading south.
Laurel and I also got to surf some fun little waves at Surfer’s Beach. Making a day of it, we packed some lunch and hitched a ride up there. We both felt like kooks not having surfed in quite a while but it felt nice to get wet. One day we rented a scooter and scooted up to take the ferry over to Harbor Island. This is home to the famous pink sanded beach. Well, if you use your imagination and pink tinted Miami J-Lo sunglasses, maybe. Everything was super expensive so we decided to scoot our way back to Hatchet Bay. After scooting all day, getting stung on the forehead by a wasp at 40 mph, eating several bugs, exploring even more caves, seeing the “Glass Window”, tandem scooting with two surfboards and offroading through a foot deep mud, we returned the muddy and beaten up scooter.
So, a week goes by and we have eaten all the local food and meet all the towns people. Small towns are neat because if you want ice you go to the pink and white house down the street and she will sell you a bowl of frozen water you have to chip yourself. If the store isn’t open go next door and knock on the door to wake them up. You sit in some elder ladies living room and fill out scooter paper work. Although cozy and comforting, it’s time to move on.
