After many many hours and months and years of prepping, we have finally made it to the Bahamas. The crossing turned out pretty bumpy with the waves probably more like 4-6 instead of 2-5. I was the helmsman for the entire crossing. Due to the waves and rocking of the boat Laurel was down below trying to sleep and take her mind off the craziness. I don’t see how she even was down below, when I tried to go below to put on foul weather gear I started getting nauseous. We pushed through the waves and wind and finally pulled up to the Big Game Marina to clear customs. It is unexplainable how good it felt to be here. It was a mentally and physically draining crossing; on my feet the entire time, sleep deprived and salt caked.
So we cleared customs, came back to the boat and slept for a long time. We left the dock and moved 50 feet to anchor up next to the marina instead of paying $1.50 per foot. The marina has showers, ping pong, wireless, bathrooms and our dinghy ride is 15 paddles away from the dinghy dock.
Our adventures so far have been biking the island, exploring the mangrove islands with the dinghy, eating Bahamian bread grilled cheeses and going to spook hill to see the beach. The water is more breathtaking and beautiful than we ever thought it was going to be. Clear is an understatement. Top to bottom is an understatement. It’s more like not-even-there-and-your-floating.
The plan now is to head over to Gun Cay, just south of Bimini 9 miles, stay there a few nights then cross over to the Berry’s. We are super excited and stoked to be here, a major crossing is done and the not-even-there-and-your-floating waters of the Caribbean await us.
